Negotiations between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and teachers’ unions—the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET)—are gaining momentum as the current non-monetary Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) nears its expiration on June 30, 2025.

The unions are pushing for significant salary increases and improved allowances in the 2025–2029 CBA.

KNUT is requesting a 60 percent increase in basic salary, arguing that previous CBAs have failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

On the other hand, KUPPET is demanding a salary hike ranging from 50 percent to 100 per cent, alongside introducing a risk allowance specifically for science teachers.

Both unions are also advocating for several allowance enhancements and overtime compensation, where teachers working on public holidays would receive fixed monetary rewards or overtime payments.

They also propose hardship allowances, offering additional compensation for teachers working in arid, semi-arid, and hard-to-staff regions.

They are seeking acting allowances for teachers who serve in acting capacities, such as deputy head teachers or department heads, without being officially confirmed.

A bill has been proposed to amend the Teachers Service Commission Act to establish a structured framework for teacher allowances.

This legislation seeks to ensure fairness and transparency in the distribution of teachers’ benefits, addressing the unions’ calls for predictable and equitable compensation.
