More than 452 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres in Trans Nzoia County are set to benefit from a major distribution of teaching and learning materials aimed at improving the quality of early childhood education.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Education and Vocational Training, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama said the initiative comes at a critical time when many ECDE teachers have been struggling without standard teaching resources.

“This is going to boost learning across the county. For quite some time, teachers had no standard teaching ideas, but now pupils will get the best education foundation,” she said.
Mutama attributed the achievement to the leadership of Governor George Natembeya, noting that the county government has significantly increased budgetary allocations towards ECDE and vocational training programmes.
“The governor has immensely increased budgetary allocations for ECDEs and vocational training centres. It is our mandate as a county government to handle these functions and ensure learners get the best learning environment,” she added.

The county government also announced plans to strengthen staffing in ECDE centres. According to the CEC member, 23 teachers who had earlier been shortlisted are expected to receive appointment letters soon, with additional recruitment planned in the next financial year to address the pupil-teacher ratio.
County Director of Early Childhood Education, Peter Omonya, said the programme goes beyond teaching aids, revealing that learners will also receive exercise books and pencils, while teachers will be supplied with chalk.
He observed that poverty had previously affected school attendance among many children, but the provision of learning materials has already contributed to increased enrolment in ECDE centres.
Deputy County Director of Education, Pecifica Ochichi, welcomed the county government’s intervention, saying the combined efforts of supplying learning materials and employing more teachers will greatly improve education standards.
“This is going to give ECDE pupils the best foundation for their future,” she said.
The distribution of the materials marks a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to strengthen early childhood education and vocational training, while ensuring learners across Trans Nzoia access quality and inclusive education.
