Witnesses alleged that the driver of the Toyota Vitz fled the scene immediately after the collision. Preliminary reports further indicate that the motorist is suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, although police said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the accident.

The incident drew a swift response from police officers and members of the public, who assisted in rescuing the injured before they were taken to hospital. Authorities have since launched a search for the driver while collecting evidence from the scene.

The accident has sparked renewed calls for enhanced road safety measures along the Kitale–Webuye Highway, particularly during morning and evening hours when hundreds of learners travel to and from school. Parents and education stakeholders have urged motorists to exercise greater caution near schools, markets and pedestrian crossings to prevent similar tragedies.

Road safety advocates have also emphasized the need for strict enforcement of traffic laws, including measures against drunk driving and reckless speeding, warning that children remain among the most vulnerable road users.

By the time of publication, the condition of the injured pupils had not been officially disclosed. Police urged anyone with information that could assist in tracing the driver to report to the nearest police station as investigations continue.

The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of responsible driving and strengthened road safety initiatives to protect learners during their daily commute to school.
