The growth of social media has transformed the lives of children around the world. Millions of young people now spend a significant amount of time online watching videos, learning new skills, communicating with friends, and sharing their creativity. Among the most influential platforms shaping the digital world today are TikTok and YouTube. These platforms have become powerful tools for education, entertainment, talent development, and communication.
YouTube is owned by Google under its parent company, Alphabet Inc. The platform was founded by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim before being acquired by Google in 2006. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, founded by Zhang Yiming. As TikTok expanded globally, the company increasingly faced pressure to improve child safety standards and digital responsibility.
However, the rapid rise of social media has also raised serious concerns regarding the safety and rights of children online. Cases of cyberbullying, online exploitation, harmful content, privacy invasion, mental health struggles, and excessive screen time have alarmed parents, governments, schools, and child rights organizations worldwide.
In response, the owners of TikTok and YouTube have introduced various policies, plans, and safety measures aimed at protecting children and ensuring safer digital environments for young users.
Introduction of age restrictions
One of the major measures introduced by both TikTok and YouTube is the enforcement of minimum age requirements. Children below certain ages are restricted from accessing full platform features.
TikTok has introduced stricter controls for users under the age of 16. Accounts belonging to younger teenagers are automatically set to private mode to prevent strangers from accessing personal content. Direct messaging features are also restricted for younger users to reduce risks of online grooming and exploitation.
YouTube developed YouTube Kids, a special version of the platform designed specifically for children. The application filters inappropriate content and gives parents more control over what children can watch online.
These age restrictions are intended to create safer online environments suitable for the maturity levels of young users.
Privacy protection measures
Children have the right to privacy and protection of personal information. Social media companies have increasingly faced criticism over data collection practices involving minors.
To address this issue, TikTok and YouTube introduced stronger privacy protections. TikTok reduced targeted advertising for teenagers and limited the visibility of younger users’ accounts. The platform also regularly encourages users to review privacy settings and understand online safety.
YouTube, following child protection laws such as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), reduced personalized advertising on children’s videos and disabled comments on many child-focused channels to limit harmful interactions.
Through these measures, both companies aim to prevent misuse of children’s data and reduce online exploitation.
Content moderation and removal of harmful material
One of the greatest dangers facing children online is exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. Violent videos, hate speech, sexual material, dangerous challenges, and misinformation can negatively affect children’s emotional and psychological development.
TikTok uses artificial intelligence systems together with human moderators to monitor uploaded videos. Content promoting self-harm, violence, bullying, or dangerous behavior is quickly flagged and removed.
YouTube has also invested heavily in advanced moderation systems. Videos violating community guidelines are deleted, while repeat offenders risk permanent suspension.
Both companies continue updating their policies regularly to respond to emerging online threats and dangerous trends targeting children.
Anti-cyberbullying strategies
Cyberbullying has become one of the most serious problems affecting children on social media platforms. Hurtful comments, online humiliation, and harassment can damage self-esteem and mental health.
TikTok introduced features that detect offensive comments before they are posted. Users are encouraged to reconsider harmful language, while victims can block or report abusive accounts.
YouTube similarly provides tools that automatically filter offensive comments and allow creators to limit interactions. Child-focused channels often receive extra protection to ensure safer communication.
These anti-bullying strategies aim to create respectful online communities where children feel protected and valued.
Parental control and family supervision
TikTok and YouTube recognize that parents play a central role in protecting children online. As a result, both companies have developed tools that allow guardians to supervise children’s digital activity.
TikTok introduced “Family Pairing,” which enables parents to connect their accounts with their children’s accounts. Through this feature, parents can monitor screen time, manage content exposure, and limit messaging options.
YouTube also allows parents to supervise viewing activity and filter content according to age categories. Guardians can decide whether children access only educational material, limited entertainment, or broader content.
These parental control systems encourage responsible guidance rather than leaving children completely unprotected online.
Protecting mental health and digital well-being
Social media addiction and excessive screen time have become growing concerns worldwide. Experts warn that prolonged online exposure can affect children’s sleep, concentration, emotional stability, and academic performance.
TikTok has introduced screen-time reminders and nighttime notifications encouraging teenagers to reduce excessive scrolling. The platform also supports campaigns promoting mental wellness and positive online behavior.
YouTube provides “Take a Break” reminders and bedtime alerts that encourage healthier digital habits. Educational resources also promote balance between online activities and real-world interaction.
These initiatives reflect growing awareness that children’s rights include mental and emotional well-being.
Combating child exploitation
TikTok and YouTube have strengthened partnerships with law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity experts, and international child protection organizations to combat child exploitation online.
Accounts involved in child abuse, trafficking, exploitation, or harmful activities are permanently banned and reported to authorities. Artificial intelligence systems help identify suspicious content before it spreads widely.
Transparency reports published by the companies also demonstrate increasing efforts to remove harmful material and improve accountability.
Challenges that still remain
Despite the many safety measures introduced by TikTok and YouTube, several challenges continue to exist. Some children still bypass age restrictions using false information. Harmful content can spread rapidly before moderators remove it. Online predators also continue targeting vulnerable users.
Critics further argue that recommendation algorithms sometimes expose children repeatedly to unhealthy or emotionally harmful content.
These challenges show that protecting children online requires continuous improvement and cooperation among governments, parents, schools, technology companies, and society as a whole.
The future of child protection online
TikTok and YouTube are increasingly recognizing that social media companies carry responsibilities that go beyond entertainment and profit. They must also safeguard children’s safety, dignity, privacy, and emotional health.

Through privacy controls, age restrictions, parental supervision tools, anti-bullying systems, content moderation, and mental health initiatives, both platforms have introduced important measures aimed at protecting children’s rights in the digital era.
However, true online safety will require ongoing innovation, stronger regulations, digital literacy education, and active parental involvement. The future of children online depends on creating internet spaces where young people can learn, interact, and grow safely without fear of exploitation or harm.
