The Tenwek High School Alumni community is in mourning following the passing of distinguished scholar Professor Wilson Yaban, who died last week while receiving treatment at a hospital in Eldoret.
His death marks the end of an illustrious academic journey spanning decades and touching countless lives in Kenya and abroad.
Prof. Yaban, celebrated for his towering academic achievements, began his education at Tenwek High School before proceeding to Egerton College, where he earned a Diploma in Range Science with Distinction.
His pursuit of knowledge later took him to the United States, where he completed a Bachelor’s degree at New Mexico State University, a Master’s degree at Utah State University, and ultimately a PhD at Illinois State University.
Upon returning to Kenya, Prof. Yaban dedicated his life to academia, taking up teaching roles at Egerton University and later Moi University. Known for his commitment to excellence and mentorship, he became one of the longest-serving lecturers in his field.
His distinguished service culminated in his appointment as the Principal of Moi University’s Mombasa Campus, where he played a key role in strengthening academic programs and guiding young scholars.

Alumni and colleagues describe him as a humble intellectual giant, deeply committed to education and community service. Many credit him with shaping their academic paths and inspiring future generations to pursue higher learning.
The Tenwek High School Alumni Forum expressed deep sorrow over his passing, noting that the institution had lost one of its most accomplished and respected sons.
Messages of condolence continue to pour in from former students, friends, and the wider academic fraternity.
Prof. Yaban’s legacy as a scholar, mentor, and administrator is expected to endure within Kenya’s education sector, where his contributions have left a lasting mark.
