Teachers’ outcry as TSC system locks them out of promotion

The newly transferred teachers across the country have pleaded with President William Ruto to come to their rescue as they fear missing out on the upcoming promotions as advertised by the Teachers Service Commission.

The teachers through a notice seen by Education News, thanked the president for the salary increment, especially for the teachers who have stagnated for over a decade in the same cadre but voiced their frustrations over the lack of effort by TSC to implement the smooth transition of TMIS and Tpay codes from their previous stations to their new stations as failure to which they stand to lose on the promotions.

“It takes ages to change station code in TMIS as noted by our undercover. The recently transferred teachers might miss out on the advertised promotions if swift action is not taken,

“TMIS is posing a challenge for the teachers to make their application. It will be unfair to let this process continue if there is no levelled playground for all applicants. This is like locking out some teachers,” the notice read in part.

At the same time, the teachers urged the ICT office at the TSC to fast-track the admission of teachers to their new stations to allow them to make applications as they said it would be unfair if the process continues without others participating in it.

“Changing pay stations, the work station is not the work of the teacher but rather the work of the commission. When such is not corrected, teachers should not be locked out! This will set a dangerous precedence!” the notice added.

The Teachers Service Commission last week announced it will promote over 36,000 teachers.

The Commission, through a statement, said the promotions will be done across nine grades.

“Promotions will be spread across primary, secondary schools and Teacher training colleges,” TSC said.

TSC has set aside 12, 716 promotions for senior masters under grade C4, while senior teachers under C2 have up to 10,819 to be elevated.

“For head teachers, the commission has set aside 1,049 promotions under grade C5.”

700 promotion positions have been set aside for senior teachers in special needs schools in grade C2 while 200 more positions for senior lecturers in Teachers’ training colleges.

For senior principals, TSC stated that they have slated 108 promotional positions.

“Those who are interested in the positions should send their applications by September 8, 2023, through the TSC portal,” the statement read.
