Teachers mourn death of ex-MP, laud her for empowering girl-child in Nyamira

Junior Secondary School Teachers from Nyamira County have mourned the late ex-Member of Parliament, (MP) Catherine Nyamato as a leader who valued education and supported children from disadvantaged homes to access education.

Led by Asati Atunga, they said that the former Nominated MP during President Moi’s regime, started a pioneering Education Foundation that assisted many children from poor homes to acquire computer information literacy for their self-development.

‘She had a vision of equipping the youth with modern knowledge and those who passed through her hands are now important people in society.” He said.

According to the family Members, the late Nyamato collapsed and died on Wednesday at Kijauri area as she inspected a road that was being repaired by the boda boda riders.

She was rushed to Summit Hospital in the town where she was pronounced dead.

During her tenure as Nominated MP from West Mugirango Constituency from 1997- 2002, Nyamato championed advocacy for Women’s rights and fought outdated cultural challenges like FGM and Gender Based Violence with zeal.

Among the first people to send their condolences to the family was Kisii County Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri who termed the late Nyamato a gallant leader who led Maendeleo ya Wanawake with wisdom and encouragement.

“Her approach of leadership encouraged many women to take their rightful positions to seek elective positions in politics contrary from the previous years when women were seen as passive voters only.” She said

Okenyuri said that the late Nyamato has left a leadership legacy worth emulation by the upcoming young women aspiring leaders.

She poured many praises to the deceased saying that her effort in supporting the education of the girl child in the region, witnessed many of them joining Universities to better their lives.

“I used to admire her leadership style of encouraging unity when I was in University and copied her and now Iam a politician and hope to continue following her footsteps for greater political heights.

She wished God’s grace for the family, the Maendeleo ya Wanawake group and the entire country as they mourn the late nominated Member of Parliament.

The late Nyamato will be remembered as one of the pioneering Women politicians from the large Gusii region who including Clare Omanga who was the first Woman Mayor in Kisii county, Wilkester Onsando and Bathseba Sanaya both of them who served as National chairmen of Maendeleo ya Wanawake groups.
