President William Ruto’s address on the state of the nation yesterday, has attracted varied applause from teachers, as many terming it as hope for the education sectors.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Kisii branch termed the speech a good hope for the country but asked the President to honour his promises on teachers by confirming more than 20,000 intern teachers into permanent and pensionable terms.
KUPPET Kisii branch Chairman Laban Ouko who spoke to the public in Ogembo town said teachers are professionals who should be treated with dignity as their profession dictates instead of being employed on contract basis like any farm hand workers.
The Chairman asked the Ministry of education to move with speed and grant Junior Secondary School teachers (JSS) autonomy to enable them discharge their duties harmoniously.

He said that placing them under the administration of Primary school headteachers causes unnecessary tension that demotivate them and called for the rectification of the anomaly.
Ouko added that the autonomy to these cadre of teachers will give them freedom of creativity, innovation and contented as they mold children into better citizens.
Stating that teachers are very instrumental in the development of any country, Ouko appealed to the government to ensure their security and welfare by streamlining the operations of Social Healthy Authority (SHA) to enable them good access to health facility for them and their families.
He asked the Education CS Julius Ogamba to be more proactive in the main issues like the promotion of teachers by putting in place policies that cushion teachers from bad policies at Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
