- Education stakeholders at the Dr. Anyang’s Mentorship Forum urged teachers to pursue continuous professional development.
- TSC commissioner Dr. Nicodemus Anyang said the Busia-based programme mentors young professionals into future education managers.
- Speakers called for digital skills, integrity and collaboration to prepare teachers for leadership roles in the evolving sector.
Teachers have been challenged to embrace mentorship, collaboration and continuous professional development to enhance their career progression and prepare for leadership roles in the education sector.
The call was made during the Annual General Meeting of the Dr. Anyang’s Mentorship Forum held at Laytaste Resort in Machakusi, Busia County, where education stakeholders underscored the importance of nurturing future education managers through deliberate mentorship and professional networking.
Speaking at the forum, founder Dr. Nicodemus Anyang, a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) commissioner, said the mentorship initiative was established to help young professionals avoid career stagnation and equip them with leadership skills. The programme began in 2018 under a different name before being rebranded in 2022. The Busia-based forum currently has more than 60 members drawn from various educational institutions.
“Our goal is to mentor young professionals into effective education managers and leaders. We also support one another through team building, psychosocial support and professional networking,” he said.
Dr. Anyang noted that the forum also champions the effective implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), saying its success depends on collaboration among teachers and learners.
“The new curriculum promotes collaborative learning where teachers serve as facilitators while learners work together to solve problems. We encourage teachers to embrace the same collaborative spirit in their professional lives,” he said.
He urged school heads to invest in mentorship programmes and promote collaborative learning as a strategy for preparing the next generation of education leaders.
Digital Skills and Professional Conduct
Migori County TSC Director and motivational speaker Jean Otwani called on teachers to pursue continuous professional growth and embrace digital skills to remain relevant in the evolving education landscape. She said digital competence and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have become essential tools in lesson preparation, research and personal financial empowerment.
Ms. Otwani also reminded teachers to uphold the TSC Code of Conduct and Ethics by demonstrating professionalism, accountability and respect both within schools and the communities they serve. She cautioned educators against conduct that undermines the dignity of the teaching profession, including excessive alcohol consumption in public.
National motivational speaker Dr. Robert Papa encouraged school heads to appoint competent members to Boards of Management, saying effective boards are critical to improving school performance and transforming learners’ lives.
Integrity, Resilience and Community Engagement
Former Busia County Executive Committee Member for Transport and Public Works and Iteso Cultural Union minister Okwara Ekirapa urged teachers to protect the dignity of the profession by living exemplary lives, noting that their influence extends beyond the classroom and even into retirement.
Bungoma South Sub-County Quality Assurance and Standards Officer Joseph Omela encouraged teachers to remain resilient in the face of workplace challenges and make deliberate decisions that advance their careers.
Speaker Moffat Okisai challenged teachers to remain closely connected with the communities they serve, listen to public concerns and earn respect through integrity, professionalism and selfless service.
