Taita Taveta residents demand increased budgetary allocation for education sector

Taita Taveta County residents have called on the National Government to increase budget of Education Sector in the 2024/2025 Financial Year.

The residents who attended 2024/25 budget estimates public participation forum in Wundanyi Constituency organised by National Assembly Departmental Committee on Budget and Appropriations channeled their appeal to the committee pointing out that the government must invest in education to reduce poverty level in the region.

They indicated that increased budget will solve issues in education sector thus more money should be allocated for recruitment of teachers, promotion of interns and introduction of school feeding programmes in public schools.

Education directors from the county also presented a memorandum calling for increase of funding, indicating that the county has secondary schools that have only three teachers, and some secondary schools do not have science laboratories which are essential facilities.

The officers also presented a memorandum demanding the government to declare the region a hardship area in order to receive more teachers and funding.

They pointed out that the region has impassable murrum roads and most homes are not connected to electricity. They demanded for more funding to also address the infrastructure issues.

National Assembly Departmental Committee on Budget and Appropriations was led by Garsen MP Guyo Wario who assured the residents that their memorandum presented and the proposals made will be considered.

The committee is carrying out public forums around the country on the 2024/25 budget estimates.
