The youth have been asked to be open up to their parents and counselors to air their problems in a bid to seek solutions instead of taking their own lives.
Nyamira County Commissioner Michael Lesimamu was speaking at his Nyamira office after learning about the death of a University student who committed suicide.
He asked them to learn how to cope with social and economic hardships from their parents and teachers’ lives.
“The education given to our children is not only meant to help them to get employment but also to help them have critical minds for healthy living,” he said.
According to Bosamaro ward Assistant Chief Anthony Kaisaba, the student’s body was found hanging from a tree by the roadside.
He said that the deceased, Anthony Abuga was seen walking with his friend the previous day but was found in the aforementioned state the following day.
According to his father George Agata, the son was a third year student at the Technical University of Mombasa.
The matter was reported to Nyamira Police station who moved the body to Nyamira Referral and Teaching Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
According to scholar Grace Nyamongo, most of the suicide cases occur due to depression caused by economic hardships and misunderstandings among family members.
She identified some of the symptoms of suicidal people as self-isolation, hallucinations, threats of committing suicide, excessive alcoholism and quarrelsomeness.
Nyamongo asked families of students who exhibited such behaviour to seek help from guidance and counseling experts.
She asked families to embrace Christianity to enable them to bring up children who will depend on God for their growth and prosperity.
