One student was killed and 12 others  sustained serious injuries in a road accident along the Taveta – Voi road in Taita Taveta county on Monday..

The Form One student at Murray Girls High School in Mwatate passed on while being rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi, police confirmed

The thirteen students were  travelling back to school after their half-term break, when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road as the driver was trying to avoid hitting an elephant at Murka area in Tsavo West National Park.

Confirming the incident, Taveta sub-county police commander Charles Barasa said good Samaritans rushed the students to Taveta sub-county hospital.

One student was referred to a hospital in Mombasa county for specialised treatment and three rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi for treatment.

“Nine students have already been discharged after receiving treatment in Taveta for minor injuries,” he said.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle before it  rolled several times before landing in a ditch,” said Barasa.

Mr Barasa urged drivers using the road along the Tsavo West National Park stretch to be cautious and observe the indicated speed limits when driving to avoid hitting wildlife and causing accidents that claim innocent souls.
