A heavy storm has caused extensive destruction at Majiwa Secondary School in North Sakwa Location, Siaya County, leaving property worth millions of shillings damaged and disrupting learning activities.
The storm, which struck on Monday evening, tore through the institution with strong winds that blew off roofs and uprooted trees.
Among the hardest-hit structures were a twin dormitory and a recently renovated laboratory, both of which had their roofs ripped off and hurled more than 30 metres away.
According to the school principal, Maurice Amusala, the laboratory had just undergone repairs costing over Sh1 million, an investment he says has now been completely lost.
“All that we had invested in the renovation has gone down the drain,” he lamented.

The destruction has also severely affected students’ welfare. At the twin dormitory, which houses more than 100 learners, personal belongings including mattresses and books were soaked after being exposed to rain when the roof was blown off beyond the school fence.
Mr. Amusala estimated that more than Sh5 million will be required to restore the damaged facilities and enable the school to resume normal operations.
He warned that reopening for the second term, may not be possible unless urgent repairs are undertaken.
“We currently have no dormitories for students and no laboratory for science practicals,” he said, appealing to well-wishers for support.
The Chairperson of the School Board of Management, Dr. Kennedy Oreyo, echoed the call for assistance, urging the government through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) as well as donors to help rebuild the damaged infrastructure.
