St Paul’s Gekano retain Nyamira School games rugby title

St. Paul’s Gekano Boys High School retained Nyamira County Secondary Schools rugby 15s defeating St Kizito Nyansiongo Boys 15-5 at their home turf.

During the semis Gekano beat Nyakongo Boys 8- 6 as Nyansiongo knocked Enkinda SDA Secondary with the same margin.

Both William Nyagiro and Dalton Momanyi from Gekano remained the stars of the team as they displayed different strategic attacks to bring home the glory with Nyansiongo key player Joshua Onkoba consoling his team scoring a try.

Gekano School head of sports Wilfred Angwenyi said he was confident his boys will make Regionals to be held in Kisumu from March 19.

His optimism was echoed by the school head coach Dennis Ndemo who confidently said that they are proceeding to Regional competitions with a lot assurance of wining.

“We are going to pick the winning trophies because ours is a serious business. We are not going to joke there,” he said.

The coach thanked their principal Henry Manoti for supporting them and asked the boys to appreciate the gesture by working with zeal during the Regional meeting to bring sporting glory to their school.

He said that the Nyamira presented competitive teams in rugby this year as compared to last and attributed it to great support from principals who allowed head of sports to conduct many rugby clinics for coaches to prepare their teams well.

In girls’ category, Manga Girls from Borabu Constituency reigned over Gekano Girls of Kitutu Masaba Constituency by defeating them 22-19 to emerge winners.

Ekenyoro Technical Secondary beat Enkinda 26-19 to retain the county basketball champions’ title.

Rugby Commissioner George Onyoni commended the teams and their organisers for smooth running of the Games.

He asked the organisers to consider even rotation of the sports venues to enable banned spectatorship from the public.
