St Mary’s Nyagondo Senior School in Gem, Siaya County, has been ranked fourth nationally in the seventh edition of the Wavumbuzi Challenge, marking a major achievement for the institution in innovation, entrepreneurship and practical problem-solving.
The school’s strong performance in the national competition has placed it among the top-performing institutions in a programme designed to equip learners with entrepreneurial mindsets and practical skills needed to identify challenges and develop innovative solutions. Current reporting confirms the school’s fourth-place national ranking.
The Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurship Challenge is a free annual six-week online programme targeting junior and senior secondary school learners in Kenya. It uses gamified activities to develop entrepreneurial competencies and prepare learners to become innovative thinkers, change-makers and future leaders.
The programme also operates in Rwanda, where secondary school learners take part in similar online challenges based on real-world problems.
School to receive trophy and projectors
Following the impressive national ranking, St Mary’s Nyagondo is set to receive two mini projectors and a trophy in recognition of its performance.
On Friday, St Mary’s Nyagondo Chief Principal John Masime flagged off the school’s Director of Studies and two students who will represent the institution at the Wavumbuzi National Award Ceremony in Karen, Nairobi.
Masime described the achievement as a significant milestone for the school, saying the recognition demonstrated the potential of learners when given opportunities to explore innovation beyond the traditional classroom setting.
He said the school’s administration was committed to creating an environment where learners could develop their talents, creativity and entrepreneurial skills.
“This achievement is a clear demonstration that our learners have the ability to compete and excel at the national level when given the right support and opportunities. We are proud of their determination and creativity,” Masime said.
The chief principal congratulated the students and teachers involved in the programme, noting that the fourth-place national ranking would motivate the institution to participate in more innovation and entrepreneurship programmes.
He added that the awards and equipment to be received by the school would further support learning and innovation activities.
Challenge promotes entrepreneurial thinking
The Wavumbuzi programme uses a game-based learning environment in which learners complete quests and challenges covering different areas of entrepreneurship and real-world problem-solving.
Learners earn points as they complete activities, while schools, teachers and students can feature on leaderboards. Top performers receive prizes, and leading learners, teachers and schools are recognised at a national awards event.
The two students and the Director of Studies are expected to represent St Mary’s Nyagondo at the national awards ceremony in Karen, where the institution will formally receive its trophy and two mini projectors.
The latest achievement adds to St Mary’s Nyagondo Senior School’s growing profile as an institution keen on nurturing learners with skills that extend beyond academic performance.
The Wavumbuzi Challenge has continued to provide secondary school learners with a platform to experiment with ideas, tackle real-life problems and develop confidence in entrepreneurship and innovation.
