“Cleanliness is next to godliness” came to life in Mumias Town and its surrounding areas over the weekend, as the St. Mary’s Mumias Girls Senior School community undertook a remarkable clean-up exercise.
In what many described as a rare and commendable initiative, the students and staff dedicated their time to cleaning Mumias Town, nearby estates, Mumias Police Station, ACK Diocese premises, needy homes, Mumias Cultural Centre, and key pathways within the town and its environs.
The exercise, themed “Protecting the Girl Child,” was spearheaded by the School’s Senior Principal, Mrs. Monicah Buchichi Nyange. As part of the school’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), she led the students beyond the school compound to actively contribute to improving the town’s sanitation and environment.
St. Mary’s Mumias Girls is a premier girls’ school in the western region of Kenya, widely recognized for its consistent academic excellence and strong performance in co-curricular activities. Its impressive track record has made it a preferred choice for many parents, leading to increased student enrollment over the years.
Speaking during the exercise, Mrs. Nyange noted that the school enjoys strong support from the local community and felt it was important to reciprocate.

“Our town is not as clean as it should be, and as a school, we felt we had a role to play. We have brought our girls out to clean various parts of the town to improve the environment and promote their well-being,” she said.
Local businessman Mr. Bonface Ngashira lauded the initiative, praising the Principal for her forward-thinking approach.
“Mumias Town is facing numerous challenges, especially in sanitation. We are grateful that the school has taken proactive steps to address this. This initiative has truly breathed life into the town,” he remarked.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Mumias Police Station, Mr. Kasisi, also expressed appreciation for the school’s efforts. He highlighted the strong relationship between the institution and the police.
“St. Mary’s is one of the institutions we enjoy working with. The Principal maintains open communication with us, and we have had a very positive relationship with the school,” he said.
Market Chairperson Ali Matseshe equally commended the school administration, noting the importance of the initiative, especially during the rainy season.
“With the heavy rains, there is always a risk of disease outbreaks. By cleaning the town, the school has helped prevent diseases associated with poor sanitation,” he stated.
