Sport-based scholarship beneficiaries to USA flagged off in Elgeiyo Marakwet

Governor Wisley Rotich poses with the beneficiaries of the Pepea Scholarship Programme.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich has flagged off 14 students to different colleges and universities in the United States of America (USA) under what they call the Pepea programme.

The 14 are part of 34 selected during the county finals under athletics sponsorship abroad held in Tambach in February this year.

Another 20 students have already secured schools and are waiting for their Visas, with parents being urged to give their children hope.

Governor Rotich announced that the next selection will take place in August this year at Ward level and urged those interested in the programme to start training.

“We will have another selection in August. The process will take place in all sub-counties after which winners will face off here in Iten. I encourage parents to motivate and give hope to their children,” he said.

Rotich urged successful candidates to support others and concentrate in their education, adding that 24 other students are currently working on their Visas with the support of the county government.

“I ask the successful candidates to focus on their education and also support others here at home. We have 24 other candidates who had some challenges here and there but the county is helping them overcome the challenges as soon as possible,” added Rotich.

Coach Wilson Chepkwony disclosed that the number of participants continues to grow, further assuring that the selection will be carried out in a free and fair manner.

The students and their parents did not hide their joy, describing their selection as answered prayers.
