- The MP argues that Marimba Campus is well positioned for expansion into a standalone institution.
- He also wants a sports academy established at Mitunguu Technical Training Institute to nurture local talent.
South Imenti MP Shadrack Mwiti has drummed up support for Marimba Campus to be elevated to a fully fledged university to accommodate the rising number of learners keen to enrol at the institution.
The MP called on the Government to ensure there is a university offering degree courses in the locality, noting that residents would have an opportunity to enrol at an institution of higher learning within the area.
He noted that many learners wanted to join the institution but were unable to do so due to limited vacancies.
Speaking during the second edition of the Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) Mt Kenya Mountain Run at Marimba Campus in South Imenti Constituency, Meru County, the legislator said the campus was best suited for elevation to a standalone university.
“Ensure there is a university offering full degree courses in the locality to prevent enrolling our children in institutions which are located far. I don’t think we can have a better institution than this. It fits perfectly well. I urge all the education stakeholders to fully support the noble initiative since it will be beneficial to the community. The economic gains will trickle down to the common man. The area will undergo a total transformation for the better,” Mwiti said.
MP backs expansion of Marimba Campus
He lauded Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi for supporting efforts to secure 50 acres of land from the Mt Kenya forest area to pave the way for the expansion of Marimba Campus.
Mugambi has publicly pledged Government support for the campus expansion plans, including its requirement for 50 acres to enable it to operate as a standalone institution.
Mwiti promised to continue supporting the Mountain Run, whose theme gives priority to education of needy learners through an endowment fund, cancer research and forest conservation through tree planting.
The second edition of the MUST Mt Kenya Mountain Run was held at Marimba Campus on Saturday, September 5, under the theme “Running for Education, Cancer Research and Conservation.”
“All needy learners should enrol in schools in order to benefit from the endowment funds. I urge other MPs to support such unique initiatives. Special accolades to my age mates who are all over 70 years for participating with me in the corporate race category. Let us join hands in conserving forests, eradicating the cancer menace and educating needy learners,” said the South Imenti MP.
