Newly appointed Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Commissioner Wilson Sossion has pledged to work with President William Ruto to reform Kenya’s teaching profession, saying the country should look to global education leaders such as Singapore as it seeks to raise learning standards.
The former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General made the remarks while addressing residents in Port Tenan, Kericho County, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, days after his nomination to the TSC was formally advanced.
“I’m happy I’ve been appointed Commissioner, Teachers Service Commission. And I promise nitasaidia Rais kulainisha mambo ya walimu, walimu wapeleke Kenya Singapore. So that we have the best education in the country,” Sossion told the gathering.
Sossion said his new position at the TSC offers him a platform to push for changes that could improve the quality of education across the country, drawing on his years of experience representing teachers’ interests.
His remarks point to a broader effort to strengthen teacher capacity as part of ongoing reforms in Kenya’s education sector, with Singapore repeatedly cited by education stakeholders for its strong learning outcomes, focus on skills development, and success in preparing students for a competitive global economy.
Wilson Sossion: TSC gets a commissioner who understands teacher issues better
Sossion’s long tenure as KNUT secretary general gave him deep exposure to issues affecting teachers, a background he says positions him well to contribute meaningfully to the reform agenda now that he sits on the Commission.
Parliament to Vet Ruto’s TSC Nominees
President Ruto nominated Sossion to the TSC in July 2026, alongside Antonina Lentoijoni. The two nominations were transmitted to Parliament for consideration and approval, according to a statement from the Executive Office of the President dated July 21, 2026.
Their vetting and approval by lawmakers will determine whether Sossion and Lentoijoni formally take up their seats on the Commission, a body charged with managing the teaching workforce and shaping policy affecting educators nationwide.
