13-year old Reagan Okore Otieno, a KCPE candidate of Rugunga Primary School in Bunyala, Busia County has died from sickle cell disease.

The Bunyala Sub County Director of Education George Owuoche confirmed this unfortunate incident to Education News on November 1, 2023.

He said that the boy was rushed to Port Victoria Sub County Referral Hospital on Tuesday evening for critical medical attention and was diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

“Despite the valiant efforts of the medical professionals at the hospital, the 13-year-old candidate tragically succumbed to the illness around 2 a.m. on Tuesday night,” the Director lamented.

Owuoche mentioned that in response to this heart-wrenching event, his office had organized to deliver the candidate’s examination papers to the hospital where he was receiving treatment, but, sadly, he passed away before they could be administered.

The Head of Rugunga Primary School, Denise Kujaju revealed that the young candidate had been intermittently unwell, and even during the examination rehearsal, he displayed signs of weakness.

“The candidate managed to complete his exams on the first two days but experienced deterioration in his condition after his Tuesday examination, prompting his parents to rush him to the hospital for urgent medical attention,” he stated.

Both the school head and the Bunyala Sub County Director of Education extended their heartfelt condolences to the family of the late candidate.
