Shanderema, Kibabii schools seal county spots following nail-biting football victories

Shanderema players celebrate.

Friends School Shanderema Boys advanced to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) county games after edging out St. Ignatius Mukumu Boys 4-3 in post-match penalties today, at Sigalagala National Polytechnic.

This intense fixture was a replay of the match on Sunday, June 1, which was abandoned due to crowd trouble. The chaos erupted when Mukumu scored a goal that was later disallowed following a delay by match officials—sparking fan unrest and prompting the game’s suspension at 1-1.

In Wednesday’s replay, both teams displayed defensive discipline in regulation and extra time. Shanderema, coached by Kjevin Asuba, held their nerve in the shootout against the Tsunami Boys, mentored by former Kakamega Homeboyz striker Dennis Mukaisi.

After each side converted their first penalty, Shanderema missed their second. But when Mukumu’s next taker also failed to score, the contest evened out. It remained level until Mukumu’s final kick was missed, sending Shanderema through.

Shanderema had navigated a tough group with Munyu, Shidodo, and Mukulusu, while Mukumu came through a relatively easier pool of Fesbeth Academy, Shabwali, and Shamiloli.

Now county champions for the sub-county, Shanderema look ahead to the next level, where they’ll face top-tier schools from the wider western region.

Meanwhile, in Bungoma County, St. Mary’s Kibabii Boys beat Bukembe Boys 1-0 in the Bungoma South Sub-County final to seal their county games ticket. The narrow win helped Kibabii avenge an earlier group-stage loss to the Kanduyi side.

Bukembe had progressed from Group D by beating Maliki, Kebee, and Misikhu, then thrashed Lwanda Boys 3-0 in the semis. Kibabii, led by principal Nicodemus Ogeto, topped Group A—which included Teremi Boys, Kipsis, and Toloso—before defeating Kimugui Boys 4-2 in a penalty shootout to reach the final.
