School riots: Bungoma County Commissioner warns politicians

By Tony Wafula

Bungoma County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti has warned politicians against utterances or actions that incite unrest in schools.

Speaking at a meeting with education officials from Bungoma County to deliberate on riots that have affected more than 20 schools in the county, Kimiti said legislators make laws and they should be the first to respect them.

He said investigations had revealed that riots in most schools were caused by incitement, reduced entertainment time and a breakdown of communication between schools administration and prefects.

The County Commissioner also cited drug and substance abuse and neglect by parents as some of the contributors to indiscipline in schools.

Kimiti said 49 students from the county will be charged in relation to the riots while 13 were under investigation.

He called on schools management to establish peace clubs that can help in advocating peace and harmony in schools.

Bungoma County Police Commander Musyoki Mutungi said students who are expelled from one school over indiscipline should not be accepted in another school.
