School Principal under fire for ‘mistreating’ students, staff

A principal serving at a school in Kenyenya Sub-County in Kisii County is under fire for alleged mistreatment of students and staff at the institution

The concern arose on Friday when a bitter exchange of words ensued between the principal and his librarian on the return of all books issued to Form Four candidates at the institution.

Trouble started when the principal directed the librarian to collect all the books from the students who were still going on with their KCSE examinations.

But when the teacher cum librarian began the exercise, the students protested and requested that they be allowed to continue doing revision using the books stating they were still students at the institution.

“I sought advice from the school Deputy Principal who told me it was wise to collect the books from the candidates after the completion of their examinations and clear them.” Said the librarian.

But after leaving for home after work, he was summoned urgently by the principal and was issued with sack threats for violating his directive. The principal then demanded that he reports to school that weekend and collect all the books from the candidates.

The librarian who had already travelled to Nairobi for a family get-together meeting, explained how he tried to get Kenyenya Sub-County Director for Education, George Ouma for guidance on the matter but he could not be reached.

Teachers and students who talked to Education News accused the Principal who was transferred there recently of mishandling the matter and was causing confusion at a critical time when students were doing their examinations.

“The Principal does not regard any views from us and we wonder how we can work as a team if he does not listen to us” said one cook who was sacked recently over alleged rudeness to the Principal.

Attempts to reach the principal were not successful as his phones went unanswered. Contacted, BOM Chairman, Nelson Mokua admitted that there were reports of discontent of staff at the institution and he promised to investigate on the matter and find a solution.
