The office of Kisumu County Women Representative, Ruth Odinga, has sponsored over 300 students pursuing technical courses in various tertiary institutions, reaffirming her commitment to empowering youth through skills training.

Speaking at the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) in Kisumu, Odinga also announced that an additional 300 graduates are set to be absorbed into the government’s affordable housing programme, following discussions with the secretariat.

The beneficiaries, drawn from national polytechnics and vocational training centers, are enrolled in hands-on courses such as plumbing, masonry and carpentry. Odinga emphasized that her bursary program is focused on supporting students in technical and vocational training institutions across Kisumu County, where the demand for practical skills is growing.

She urged more young people, especially women, to take up technical courses, stating that such fields should no longer be viewed as male-dominated. “We must move away from the obsession with university degrees. Many of them are no longer marketable. Technical skills are the future,” she said.

To equip graduates for success, Odinga revealed that toolboxes will be issued to those who complete their training, ensuring they can immediately begin work or start their own ventures.

The event also featured the launch of a countywide campaign against gender-based violence and femicide, with Odinga naming students who presented a petition as youth ambassadors in the fight against the vices. She encouraged them to speak up and raise awareness about the issue in their communities.

Also present was Kisumu Chief Officer for Education, Bovince Ochieng’, who pledged continued support for youth empowerment through education and advocacy.
