President William Ruto on Monday unveiled a Ksh4.5 billion Engineering and Science Complex at the University of Nairobi, a landmark initiative funded through a partnership between the French Development Agency and the governments of Kenya and France.
Speaking during an exhibition of the proposed facility at the University’s Chiromo Campus, the Head of State said the state-of-the-art complex will bolster Kenya’s capacity in engineering and scientific training, positioning the University of Nairobi as a leading hub for research, technology, and innovation in Africa.
“By investing in our youth and reforming our education system, we are empowering young people to keep pace with global trends in science and technology. We aim to nurture creators and innovators, rather than mere consumers,” President Ruto said.
The complex, which forms part of a bilateral initiative with France, is set to serve as a premier research hub for Kenya and the wider region.
The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit 2026, jointly hosted by President Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron during Macron’s second state visit to Kenya. The summit, themed around innovation, underscores the growing cooperation between Kenya and France in science and technology.
The vision for the complex dates back to 2015, when the French Development Agency invited African higher education institutions to propose projects aimed at strengthening science, technology, and innovation infrastructure.
Momentum for the initiative accelerated in March 2019 during Macron’s first visit to Kenya, leading to the signing of a Letter of Intent between the two governments to advance the project.

The UoN complex is expected to enhance the country’s research capabilities, support advanced scientific training, and cement Kenya’s role as a regional leader in technology and innovation.
