The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nyanza Region Chairman Joseph Obiri Mochama has lauded Kisii and Rongo Universities for their dedication to steering sports mentorship in secondary schools.
Speaking during the region’s Handball Inter-University and Secondary schools Open Tournament at Tabaka Boys High School, Mochama said that apart from building the participants physically, it enhances discipline and mental acuity among students.
He said that the tournament is an avenue to expose the many hidden talents of the youth and encourage their exploitation.
Alfred Obuba, one of the tournament organizers, said that the tournament is bridging the gap between Varsity and Secondary school students.
He said that it will foster the exchange of ideas and also encourage secondary students to work harder in order to join institutions of higher learning.

More than 12 schools from Kisii, Migori and Homabay counties attended the tournament where Rongo University beat Cardinal Otunga Mosocho two sets to nil while Tabaka Boys was beaten by Kisii University before being beaten again by Cardinal Otunga.
Obuba said that next year the tournament will be extended to accommodate more schools.
He thus appealed to schools in the region to register for next season’s matches adding that the venues will be rotational within the county.
“In this term, we might not do much because schools are preparing for national examinations but this is the beginning of great things to come,” Obuba said.
