Respect teachers, TSC tells parents

Parents within the Kakamega North Sub-county have been asked to respect their children’s teachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will not hesitate to transfer aggrieved teachers humiliated by their parents to new schools and let the parents employ their own.

Speaking in Friends Malava Girls during its Annual General Meeting (AGM), the TSC Sub-county Director for Kakamega North Remjus Otieno cautioned those parents who invade schools and flush out teachers and principals over poor performance that they will have to bear the brunt of employing their teachers to teach their children as the commission will transfer the teachers to a new station and leave a vacuum at the school to be filled by the parents.

“We have a countrywide shortage of teachers, and parents fail to remember that it is the learner who sits for exams and not teachers; hence, failure by the learner to perform better lies squarely to them, and not teachers, their work is to teach, and it is upon the learner to understand and grasp what has been taught to them,” he thundered.

Otieno warned that the vice of parents storming schools to flush out teachers over poor performance was a backward vice that should desist immediately and criticized the act, saying no teacher deserves to be harassed or locked out of their stations due to poor performance.

However, he called on parents to support school programmes that create a conducive learning environment and improve learners’ performance.

The Director also cautioned teachers against spying on management about how finances are utilized, as it was not part of their mandate as teachers.

“You were brought to that school to teach and not audit books of accounts, and it is none of your business to inquire how the school finances are utilized; just stick to your lane as a teacher and deliver for you to be promoted to the management level where you can also handle school finances too.”

At the same time, he took issue with teachers who share school-sensitive information with the media, saying it taints the name of institutions.

“Some of you have turned out to be pressmen, and anything happening at the school will land in the hands and ears of the local press, which is unhealthy for the smooth running of the school. Please learn to keep things under control by avoiding those rumours that could cause anarchy within the school,” he added.

As a teacher, you need to have the right pedagogy and methodology for the learner to understand. You also need to be passionate about what you do, and this will help learners develop the same passion for education.

The Sub-County Director of Education, Rose Chisumi, hailed the school’s discipline levels, noting that it was among the most disciplined of the 53 secondary schools in the sub-county.

She emphasized the need for timely fee payment as it enables school programmes to be quickly implemented.

The Director advised the Form 2 class, the last barge of the 8-4-4 curriculum, to ensure they perform better in their Form Four KCSE exams.
