Public sector unions have issued a 14-day strike notice that counts down from today over new medical insurance scheme, Social Health Authority (SHA).

In a notice issued on October 8, 2024  directed to different ministries and the Council of Governors, the ten union officials indicated that the protest is against transition from The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHA without provision of a comprehensive cover for public servants.

They also pointed out that the transition was done without transition of NHIF employees, and that there has been an increase in contributions from 2.75% of gross salary without approved benefits.

“We are available for consultations to ensure that the compressive cover is available within the 14 days, failure to which the unions will commence an industrial action on 22 October 2024,” part of the notice read.

The unions calling for the strike include Union of Kenya Civil Servants (UKCS), Kenya County Government Workers Union ( KCGWU), Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists  and Dentists  Union (KMPDU), Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO), Kenya National Union of Medical Laboratory Officers (KNUMLO), Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union (KEHPHPU), Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers’ Union (KETAWU), Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied Workers (KUCFAW), and Kenya Union of Nutritionists and Dietitians (KUNAD).

The strike notice comes as the national government extends the NHIF contract for the provision of comprehensive medical insurance for civil servants to enable seamless transition and effective service delivery to the scheme beneficiaries.
