Kirinyaga police on Sunday arrested 23 students found in a local bar at Ngurubani market in Mwea Constituency.

Speaking to the Press on the matter, Mwea-East Sub-county Police Commander Daniel Kitavi said security officers from Wang’uru police station stormed Club Season Ngurubani bar after receiving a tip off from members of the public about minors drinking at around 9pm ahead of school reopening on Monday.

He said the law enforcers had a difficult time arresting the learners since some of them escaped and were throwing stones at the police officers after being joined by Ngurubani street boys.

They also arrested the bar owner who is said to be a teacher. He will be charged for violating COVID-19 protocols on operation of bars as well as selling alcohol to students.

“We managed to arrest 11 girls and 12 boys. The teenagers from Ngurubani town and the surrounding areas are expected to be arraigned in court today (Monday morning.)’Kitavi said.
