Parents and guardians have been implored to allow their children to choose careers to pursue at learning institutions.
This would enable them to exploit their potential, improve their lives, and contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
Kisii County Culture and Sports Executive Committee Member Dr Timothy Arege said children forced to undertake careers at colleges, technical institutions and universities get frustrated after completing their Courses.
Arege spoke at the Gusii stadium yesterday when he presided over the graduation of 3000 students, including two deaf students—Eugene Ombati and Brenda Nyamokami of the Ajiry programme, jointly supported by the county government and Master Card Foundation.
“The world requires creative, innovative and skilled youths to drive it. I challenge you to utilise your acquired energy and skills to create jobs and boost your lives,” Arege said.
He challenged youths to seek expert guidance in choosing careers, think positively, use their time to exploit their talents in various fields, and shun being coerced into embracing careers against their will.
Kiogoro Ward Representative Walter Mochache asked the county government to hasten the disbursement of Ward bursaries to students before schools reopen to ease the burden on parents.
The Member of the Kisii County Assembly noted that most parents are poor and rely on the bursary to boost their children’s education in secondary schools and technical and vocational institutions.

Mochache said, “We want the cheques to be prepared early and released to schools so students are not sent home for fees.”
He lauded the county and Mastercard Foundation for supporting the Ajiry programme, noting that it equipped learners with computer skills, mental health, and financial management.
Ismael Nyakoni, the program’s Manager, lauded Shining Hope for Communities ( SHOFCO), a nongovernmental organisation, for sponsoring programme graduates to further their education in tertiary institutions.
Nyakoni said, “Today, we are celebrating our second anniversary since the program began. More than 20,000 students have graduated, and more are enrolling.”
