Parents and guardians have been   urged to spend quality time with their children during the long holiday season, so as to mentor, advise, bond, and closely monitor their behaviours.

Peter Nyamweya Momanyi, the head teacher at St Andrew Kaggwa Boys Primary and Junior Secondary, emphasized the critical role of parents in understanding their children’s behaviour and the company they keep, particularly during extended breaks away from school.

“Since children spend most of their time with teachers, holidays provide a perfect opportunity for parents to actively monitor them,” he stated.

He urged parents to take responsibility for guiding their children’s activities and movements, ensuring they engage in productive pursuits.

“As this holiday is quite long, children will be at home for an extended period. We have already instilled values and disciplines in them at school, and it’s crucial that these continue at home,” Nyamweya said.

He stressed the importance of parents working diligently to shape their children’s character, advocating for open communication to understand and address any challenges they may face.

By maintaining close relationships, parents can easily identify and address any concerning behaviours or activities.

“Disciplining children is primarily the responsibility of parents, not teachers,” Nyamweya added.

He highlighted the risks of holiday peer pressure leading to undesirable outcomes such as unwanted pregnancies and substance abuse, urging parents to closely monitor their children’s friendships and activities.

“The holidays present an excellent opportunity for parents to actively monitor, nurture, and guide their children towards responsible citizenship,” he noted.

Nyamweya encouraged parents to prioritize spending time with their children, actively supporting and assisting them instead of delegating responsibilities to household staff.

He also emphasized the role of spiritual guidance in children’s development, recommending regular church attendance.
