Parents in Budalang’i Constituency of Busia County have been urged to play their parental roles effectively and ensure they protect and safeguard their schoolgirls from early pregnancies.

Speaking to Education News at the Sub-county headquarters today, the Sub-county Director of Education (CDE) George Owuoche expressed concerns that early pregnancies have reached alarming levels and resulted in a big number of schoolgirls dropping out of school prematurely.

The CDE attributed the rising early pregnancy cases to funeral dances popularly known as “Disco Matanga”.

He as well appealed to chiefs and their assistants to utilize every opportunity at their disposal to support campaigns against the menace.

“As chiefs, you are in a better position to sensitize parents against allowing their girls to attend night discos,” said Owuoche, further urging candidates for both KCPE and KCSE to put more effort in their studies so that they can post good results in their final exams, which he emphasized would determine their future.
