Parents blame KNEC over exam cheating

By Norah Musega

National Parents Association Migori branch chair now wants the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) officials investigated over exam leakage during the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Peter Odondi insisted that KNEC officials are the ones charged with the responsibility of setting, transporting and securing the exams and therefore should be held responsible in case of any interference that occurs during the exercise and not students.

“Why would the police interrogate students who are still sitting for their exams and expect them to concentrate and pass the exams because of an exam leakage that they are not responsible for? We must stop the kind of harassment going on in the country and direct all attention to the source of the exam,” said Odondi.

Odondi lamented that every year its either teachers or students that are punished for a mistake that is obvious would be coming from people within the KNEC department since they can easily access the exam materials.

He however called on parents to boost their skills in taking good care of their children over the holidays to help reduce and eliminate the number of girls who resume learning after being made young mothers.

He noted that more attention need to go to the class eight candidates who are expected to join form one in July this year.

The chair noted that the period between now and when the students are expected to join secondary schools is a long period that needs extra watch.

He called on parents not to let their candidates celebrate the results on their own but should try to keep them busy with house chores and other activities that would only impact their lives positively.
