Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has stated that former union boss Wilson Sossion is not eligible to contest for the union’s top position.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Oyuu emphasised that the KNUT constitution allows only registered members to vie for leadership positions, stating that he had resigned in 2021.

He questioned Sossion’s eligibility, noting that non-members cannot seek entry into the race outside the established rules.

“I am not even aware if he is vying. The constitution must be adhered to, as it determines eligibility,” Oyuu said.

“If you are not a member, you cannot go behind the fence and enter the field through the ‘panya route’. This is a union of order and discipline, guided strictly by its constitution.” Oyuu added.

Oyuu added that individuals who are not members should refrain from interfering with the union’s internal processes.

His remarks come after Sossion officially announced his intention to reclaim the KNUT Secretary General position, a role he held for over a decade.

Sossion said his decision was driven by concern over the challenges currently facing teachers across the country.

In an interview with a local radio station on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Sossion likened his return to a biblical mission.

“I am like Moses. I have heard the cries of my teachers in Egypt, and I will return,” he said, signaling his determination to address teachers’ grievances.

He said he is eligible to contest since he has been paying his KNUT dues and is capable of running the affairs of the union.
