Panic and fear enshrouded Ikonge PAG Girls’ School in Nyamira County on Wednesday after 148 Girls were admitted at various hospitals after they started complaining of stomachache.
Speaking to Education News, the Officer in charge of Ekerenyo Sub-county Hospital said that 120 students were admitted to the facility complaining of similar symptoms.
“All of them complained of abdominal pains as diarrhea and vomiting were exhibited. “He said.
“Most of the girls were treated and showed good responses to drugs but 4 of them have not yet stabilized. “He said.
Asked to identify the ailment from which the girls were suffering he said they had taken some culture to Kisumu main laboratory for investigation.
He added that a team of health officers had been released to the school to investigate and give a clear report on the health status of the institution.
“Their health inspection together with the laboratory tests will help us to compile a report on the cause of the girls’ health status.
Nyamira North Sub-county Director of Education Clare Oyura confirmed the incident.
“I visited Ekerenyo hospital and show the girls who feared for their lives but told them they were in the safe hands of the medics.
Mrs. Oyura assured parents of their children’s safety saying he acted with speed to rush the girls to various hospitals adding that they will return to school to continue with their studies.
