Only 621 KCSE candidates cheated in this year’s KCSE, CS says

Education Cabinet Secretary(CS) Julius Ogamba has said a total of 621 KCSE candidates cheated in the exams, nevertheless observing that the majority upheld integrity.

In a statement on Friday, the CS noted that only 0.064 percent  of the candidates cheated, the modes including unauthorized written materials, mobile phones, collusion, sharing images of question papers on social media, and impersonation.

The cases, which are under investigation, were reported in 198 out of the 10,754 examination centres, representing 1.841 percent of the total.

“All above cases are under active investigation and stern action will be taken on individuals found culpable,” the CS said.

He said the marking of the exams will be done in time as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has invited 32,800 examiners this year, up from 29,876 in 2023.

The CS also extended heartfelt congratulations to all 2024 candidates for their resilience and dedication and also teachers, parents and stakeholders for their unwavering support.

KNEC successfully administered two major national exams this year – KPSEA with 1,313,913 candidates in 32,573 examination centres, and KCSE with 965,501 candidates in 10,754 examination centres supported by 610 distribution centres.

The education sector has gone through a number of challenges and successes this year, including the unprecedented floods that delayed reopening of schools for second term, and industrial action by teachers and lecturers.
