Old students rally behind school, promise to turn around facilities

Schools have been asked to involve their old students in infrastructure development projects to ensure delivery of quality work.

Speaking at St. Mary’s Otamba Girls School during Prize Giving Day, Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament (MP) Zahir Jhanda noted that schools supported by their alumni register more progress.

In a speech read on his behalf by Constituency Manager Evans Makori, the MP promised to use NG-CDF funds to support all education projects in the area but asked parents not to depend on it all and instead find other ways to support their education.

“The government is determined to provide quality education through improvement of infrastructure and provision of bursaries but parents should ensure they provide basic needs and guidance to their children,” he said.

Jhanda praised the school for posting stellar performance in the 2022 KCSE examinations and awarded the 33 candidates who scored B- and above with Ksh10,000 and a laptop each.

He congratulated them for putting the school on a good performance track and asked the current candidates to follow suit and work smart to achieve their dreams for a better future.

The alumni class of 1989/90 led by Charles Kiage expressed their joy on the upward trajectory of the school’s education standards.

“We are going to frequent this school to monitor your progress and hope you will reciprocate our efforts by posting impressive results,” he said.

He also led his colleagues to reward the successful students with an assortment of laptops, mobile phones, suitcases and laptops.

School Principal Ruth Inganga lauded teachers, parents and students for working as a team to achieve the excellent results.

She highlighted stretched classrooms, lack of a modern laboratory and prompt payment of school fees as the main challenges she was facing, but said that the school would pull through due to the community’s goodwill.

The ceremony was graced by Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Nyanza Region Chairman Zablon Otiso and Nyanchwa Girls School Principal Mrs. Irungu among other principals.

Otiso promised that his office will add another transformer to the school to reinforce uninterrupted supply of electricity.

He asked students to apply more efforts towards studying science subjects to enable them fit in the ever competitive career market.
