The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will conduct free vehicle inspections for school buses and vans this weekend, as part of a nationwide safety campaign aimed at reducing road accidents involving learners.
The campaign, dubbed “Operation Watoto Wafike Salama,” will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 9am to 3pm at designated NTSA inspection centres across the country.
In Kisii County, the exercise will take place on Friday, August 22, to accommodate both local schools and transport operators.
NTSA says the inspections are designed to assess the roadworthiness of vehicles ahead of the third term reopening of schools, with a focus on identifying mechanical faults and guiding schools on necessary repairs.
“We will make safety assessments to guide motor vehicle owners and schools on corrective measures to ensure the safety of all our children,” the agency said.

Inspection areas will include braking systems, tires, seatbelts, lighting, and overall mechanical condition.
Vehicle owners will receive feedback and recommendations to help meet safety standards.
Inspection centres for the exercise will include Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Nyahururu, Machakos, Voi, Kitale, Kakamega, Nyeri, Thika, Kisumu, Embu, Meru, Kericho, Garissa, and the Likoni Road centre in Nairobi.
NTSA has urged schools and transport service providers to take full advantage of the free inspections.
The campaign comes just days after a tragic school bus crash at Kisumu’s infamous Coptic roundabout, which claimed over 20 lives.
