Police have arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of killing an 18-year-old Form Four student in Molo, Nakuru County, following a sustained manhunt by detectives.
The suspect, identified as Walter Kipkoech, was arrested at a hideout in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, by detectives from Molo and officers attached to the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) at the Regional Criminal Investigations Headquarters in the Rift Valley.
Kipkoech is accused of killing Joy Wangui, a Form Four student at Molo Secondary School, whose body was discovered inside a house in the Kiambaa area of Moto Location. According to preliminary police investigations, Wangui's brother had briefly left the house to visit a nearby shop and, upon returning, reportedly found his sister dead in the kitchen.
Detectives who visited the scene recovered an axe, a panga and two knives, which were reportedly found with bloodstains near the body. Police also recovered the deceased's head in a corridor, where investigators said a message had allegedly been written on a wall using blood.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Kipkoech was known to the deceased and was her boyfriend. Detectives are pursuing a possible relationship dispute as part of their investigations into the motive for the killing.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect was reportedly wearing a blood-stained boxer, a white T-shirt bearing the deceased's name at the hem and black jeans with visible blood stains, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He was subsequently taken to Molo Police Station, where he is being processed as detectives continue investigations.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the death. The DCI has expressed condolences to Wangui's family and pledged to pursue the case to its logical conclusion, saying anyone found culpable will face the law.
