Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs) for Special Needs Education (SNE) are calling on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to consider granting them a special allowance similar to the one provided to teachers, citing the demanding nature of their work.
Speaking to Education News from the Central and Eastern regions, the CSOs said their work involves moving around vast sub-counties to carry out assessments, monitor curriculum implementation, support teachers and conduct stakeholder sensitisation programmes.
The officers said their responsibilities require them to cover large geographical areas, often travelling to different schools and communities to provide professional support and ensure learners with special educational needs receive appropriate services.
They argued that as the Commission continues to increase and improve special allowances for teachers, CSOs who supervise and support them should also be considered for a similar allowance. The CSOs said such an allowance would recognise the unique demands of their work and motivate them to continue supporting teachers and improving the delivery of Special Needs Education across the country. "We move around vast sub-counties carrying out assessments and sensitising stakeholders. Our work involves extensive travelling and comes with additional responsibilities," the officers said.
They noted that CSOs play a critical role in ensuring that teachers have the necessary professional support to effectively serve learners with special needs. There are about 314 CSOs for Special Needs Education across the country, making them an important component of the education support system.
The officers are now appealing to the TSC to consider their request as it reviews and enhances special allowances for teachers, saying that recognising their work would boost morale and improve service delivery in Special Needs Education.
