The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Machakos branch has demanded an immediate independent investigation into the death of Caroline Mutheu Mutisya, a teacher at Kilango Senior School, following an incident at Matuu Hospital.

The union expressed deep grief and indignation over the death of the educator on October 24, 2026, after she sought medical attention for what was reported as a minor complaint while accompanied by her husband.

According to statements issued by the branch leadership, serious concerns have been raised regarding the time taken to assess the patient, alleged delays in initiating care and the overall management of her case before her death was confirmed.

Union questions emergency response

The union highlighted critical gaps in the timeline, questioning why arrangements for an emergency ambulance and possible air evacuation to Nairobi were only considered after her condition had severely deteriorated.

In a comprehensive seven-point demand, the branch called on hospital management to release a full written account of events, preserve all triage notes, medical observations, duty rosters and treatment logs, and submit to an independent clinical review.

The union also appealed to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and the Ministry of Health to examine the facility's emergency response standards, emphasising that patient safety and clinical care must take absolute priority over administrative procedures or financial considerations.

Extending condolences to the family, learners and staff of Kilango Senior School, the union affirmed that it would press the relevant regulatory and investigative authorities until the complete facts surrounding the tragedy were established.
