Police in Kisii have arrested a man suspected to be a teacher for questioning over the alleged theft and sale of a widow's bull.
According to villagers in Bomobea, Marani Sub-county, Kitutu Chache North Constituency, the widow woke up to find her bull missing from the cattle shed. She raised an alarm, attracting neighbours who rushed to her home to help.
After listening to her account, the villagers suspected the animal could have been taken to Nyakong'o market for sale and organised a follow-up to track the suspect. At the market, they reportedly found the suspect, who had already sold the bull to known buyers for Sh45,000. The villagers alerted police officers, who moved in and arrested him before he could spend the money.
An angry crowd that had gathered at the scene reportedly wanted to assault the suspect, but police officers from Omoraa Police Station intervened to prevent residents from taking the law into their own hands.
Residents who spoke to Education News claimed the suspect had been linked to other alleged offences in the area, including pickpocketing and fraudulent M-Pesa transactions, though these claims have not been independently verified. When Education News sought to interview the suspect, the team was not granted access by police officers guarding him.
Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
