Kerongorori Secondary School in Kenyenya Sub-County, Kisii County, has grown from a humble community day school into one of the most respected Extra-County schools in the region, known for discipline, academic excellence and strong moral values, located in the heart of the lush Gusii highlands.
The history of the school is marked by a lineage of leaders who have each left a distinct mark on its development. It was first nurtured by Prof. Henry Onderi, a firm but compassionate educationist who laid a solid academic and disciplinary foundation before proceeding for further studies, rising to become Chairman of the Kisii County Education Board, and now serving as a Senior Professor at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).
He was succeeded by Dr Tabitha Mogonchi, a transformative principal who lifted the school from good to great, with Kerongorori becoming known for academic improvement and mentorship under her leadership. Her exemplary service earned her a promotion to head Kereri Girls National School.
Another key figure in the school's growth is Mr Richard Ondati, who served as Deputy Principal at Kerongorori with great dedication before being transferred to Mochorwa Secondary School as Principal, where he excelled, and has now been elevated to the larger Extra-County school, Nyabisase Secondary School in Nyamache Sub-County, a clear sign that Kerongorori is a breeding ground for leaders.
The current principal, Dr. Peter Nyamoko, has taken the school to its golden era, serving as an academic, a manager and a father figure. He has modernised infrastructure, strengthened guidance and counselling, motivated teachers and instilled a culture of hard work among students. Today, Kerongorori Secondary School has a vibrant population of over 1,200 students from Form One to Form Four across four streams, served by more than 45 TSC and BOM teachers plus dedicated support staff. In the 2025 KCSE results, the school posted impressive performance with over 85 per cent of candidates attaining direct university entry grades, with many scoring B+ and above, placing it among the top-performing and most improved schools in Kisii County.
Both doctorate holders, Dr Peter Nyamoko and Dr Tabitha Mogonchi, were nominated for Presidential Awards for their exemplary service in the education sector, and were rewarded by President William Ruto at Kasarani during the World Teachers' Day national celebrations. Both emerged as double Presidential Awardees for Education Excellence, a historic double honour that has brought great pride to Kerongorori Secondary School, Kenyenya Sub-County and Kisii County at large.
For teachers, students and parents, Kerongorori offers a bright future. With a visionary Board of Management, a supportive parents association, a focused student body and double award-winning leadership, the school remains a factory of excellence that continues to surprise the Gusii region and the nation at large.
