The government is stepping up efforts to expand access to affordable, quality technical and vocational education through digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and regional collaboration, following discussions involving the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL).
The discussions brought together the CEO of KSTVET and Robert Okinda, an Education Specialist at COL based in Vancouver, Canada, to explore ways of making technology-enabled training more accessible to learners across Africa.

The meeting coincided with the launch of the African Regional Centre for Open TVET, a milestone aimed at strengthening open, flexible and technology-enabled technical and vocational education and training systems across the continent.
Key areas of collaboration include the digitisation of assessments and capacity building for TVET trainers, with particular emphasis on the responsible and effective use of AI in teaching, training and assessment. The proposed collaboration comes as TVET institutions increasingly explore digital solutions to improve the delivery of practical skills, widen participation and respond to changing labour-market demands.

Integrating AI and other digital tools into TVET could support more flexible learning, improve assessment processes and equip trainers with new approaches to instruction. However, effective implementation will depend on appropriate infrastructure, trainer preparedness and the responsible application of emerging technologies. The initiative also places regional cooperation at the centre of efforts to strengthen TVET systems, allowing African institutions to explore approaches that can make skills training more accessible and responsive to the needs of learners and employers.

As the sector evolves, the focus is on ensuring that technology complements practical instruction while helping trainers and trainees acquire competencies relevant to the modern workplace. The State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training is among the key government institutions involved in advancing the TVET agenda.
