Ndindi Nyoro opposes proposal to make Mathematics optional in senior secondary schools

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro joined Kahuhia Girls’ High School in a dance during their Education Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony over the weekend.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has vehemently opposed making mathematics optional at the Senior Secondary School (SSS), emphasizing that mathematics is widely applied in various aspects of life and should be taught as a major subject through senior secondary education.

Nyoro said mathematics is vital in developing students’ abilities, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, while speaking during a prize-giving event at Kahuhia Girls’ High School in Kahuro Sub-county.

He asked Kenya to adapt its educational system to these developments to stay competitive, pointing out that STEM-related courses increase innovation.

“The world is embracing new technical innovations and digital transformations. All this needs basic knowledge in mathematics, and our country cannot be left behind by making the subject optional, especially in senior secondary schools,” he said.

Having studied arts himself, Nyoro observed that mathematics and sciences are crucial in preparing students for modern technological demands.

He asked education stakeholders and policymakers to recognize mathematics’ essential role and ensure it remains a key component of the curriculum.
