Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has urged learners to uphold discipline and channel their digital skills toward building, rather than jeopardizing, their future.
Speaking in Kwale County, Mvurya expressed concern over a growing trend in which some students use social media platforms to abuse and ridicule leaders. He noted that, ironically, some of those involved are beneficiaries of educational support from the very leaders they criticize online.
“It is not the intention of parents and teachers to educate children so that they can speak ill of leaders on social media,” Mvurya said, adding that such behavior undermines the values instilled at home and in school.
The CS lamented that instead of using their digital knowledge to improve their lives, some youth misuse it in ways that risk derailing their future. He reminded students that as members of a youthful generation, they still have a long journey ahead; one that requires discipline, respect, and focus.

Mvurya warned that indiscipline, particularly online misconduct, could limit opportunities and hinder their path to success. He noted that many of the leaders being ridiculed have made significant contributions to national and local development, leaving behind strong legacies.
“Tarnishing leaders’ names on social media has minimal impact on their development track record,” he said, cautioning that such actions could instead harm the young people involved by costing them valuable opportunities.
He emphasized that young people still rely on guidance, mentorship, and support to achieve their goals, and reckless online behavior could jeopardize those prospects.
Mvurya also called on parents to remain vigilant and actively guide their children as they grow. He stressed that proper upbringing begins at home, with parents playing a central role in shaping values.
He urged parents to engage regularly with their children and instill virtues that will help them become responsible and respectful members of society.
