The Council for Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) North Rift region Chairman Abubakar Bini has called on the Ministry of Education to extend the school second term calendar by two weeks.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, Bini said this will help to cover for the time wasted during the August polls.

“As religious leaders from the North Rift, we are calling on the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof George Magoha to stretch the second term education calendar by two weeks. This will allow students to have enough time to complete their syllabus and adequately prepare for exams,” said Bini.

He said the country cannot ignore the needs of the child as all have a right to education, which they will have been denied if their study time is shortened.

“Education is the key to everything. Students cannot lose two weeks then sit exams. Chances are it will ruin their future yet they are the pillars of tomorrow,” added the cleric.

This comes after the National Parents Association chairperson Nicholas Maiyo asked the CS to extend the school calendar to allow adequate time for learning and preparations for national examinations later in the year.

According to Maiyo, extension will compensate for the number of days lost during the electioneering period.

Regarding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Bini highlighted the need for a committee of experts to go through it so as to improve on its viability.

“I am calling upon President-Elect William Ruto to form a committee of experts that will look into the CBC curriculum and  come up with solutions to the challenges that have been facing it,” said  Bini.
