Musingu sink Kakamega High, retain football crown as Butere Girls also seal back-to-back glory

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) finals concluded dramatically at the iconic Mumias Sports Complex, with Musingu Boys and Butere Girls lifting the coveted football trophies after a weekend of electrifying action and fierce competition.

In a highly anticipated boys’ semifinal, Musingu Boys High School locked horns with perennial rivals Kakamega High School in a tense encounter that ended in a deadlock after regulation time. The match was decided by a nail-biting penalty shootout, where Musingu edged their rivals 5–4 to book a place in the final. They carried that momentum into the championship clash, securing a deserved 2–0 victory over Butere Boys to be crowned champions.

The girls’ football contest was equally gripping. Butere Girls cruised past Mwira with a 4–2 win in the semifinals, while Bishop Njenga put on a commanding performance to dispatch Kimang’eti 4–0. The final lived up to its billing, with Butere edging out Bishop Njenga 2–1 in a hard-fought match to seal the title.

Netball action showcased skill and dominance. Mukuyu made a bold statement with a resounding 67–25 victory over Ihonje in the semifinals, while Mwitoti saw off Namasoli 44–28. Namasoli bounced back in the third-place playoff to thrash Ihonje 54–18. In the grand finale, Mukuyu proved unstoppable, clinching the championship with a 49–35 triumph over Mwitoti.

Rugby enthusiasts were treated to explosive matchups. In the girls’ final, Mwira put on a commanding performance to defeat Mukumu 14–5. On the boys’ side, Musingu extended their dominance, overpowering St. Peter’s 24–12 in a bruising contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

In volleyball, Mwitoti Girls swept aside Bishop Sulumeti from Lugari with a clinical 3–0 victory. The boys’ final was a thrilling affair as Mavala Boys overpowered Mukumu Boys 3–1 in a high-octane showdown to clinch the top honours.

The grand finale was graced by CPA Jackline Kakayi Masicha, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Sports, representing Governor Fernandes Barasa. In her keynote address, CPA Kakayi hailed the athletes for their discipline, passion, and resilience. She emphasised the critical role of school sports in identifying and nurturing the next generation of Kenyan sports stars, reaffirming the country’s commitment to youth empowerment through structured sports development. She also lauded the organisers for the flawless execution of the tournament.

Also in attendance were County Secretary Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka, CECM for Education Dr. Benard Amwayi, Youth Advisor to the Governor Mr. Emmanuel Makokha, and County Principal Sports Officer Mr. Antony Okumu.

With the county phase now complete, the winning teams shift their focus to the upcoming regional championships, where they aim to extend their dominance and represent Kakamega County on a larger stage.
