MPs finalize plans to petition courts over the fate of NGCDF

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo meets enthusiastic pupils of a school in his constituency. He will lead petitioners to force the government to release NGCDF funds.

MPs have finalized plans to take Treasury to court to seek its intervention on the protracted war over the NGCDF, which they claim is being threatened.

Rarieda MP Dr. Otiende Amollo disclosed that over two thirds of the legislators have appended their signatures in support of the petition seeking to compel the government to release all the monies owed to NGCDF.

The MP, who said he will lead the legal team, regretted that the country risked losing the numerous gains it has achieved courtesy of the fund if it is not protected from the current leadership, which he claims is hell-bent on ensuring its collapse.

“We are moving to court to petition over the NGCDF. The Treasury owes billions of shillings in arrears to the constituencies. In fact in Rarieda for instance, we have not received over 107 million in this financial year,” the MP said.

Otiende was confident of the outcome of the legal proceedings, noting that the fund is constitutional and that the courts will give a solution once and for al.

He also supported the roll-out of different bursary/ education support schemes from various state actors, stating that the burden of financing education in Kenya needs concerted efforts.

He made the remarks when he presided over the release of over 15 million bursaries to over 3000 students in all the 48 secondary schools in the constituency and for students studying outside the region.

“We received 30 million shillings and purposed to allocate the lions share to bursaries, then the rest to help support infrastructure in our schools. The support went to all the 48 secondary schools in Rarieda to a tune of 10 million shillings and to our students in other schools outside the constituency who benefited from 5 million shillings support. Overall, 200 schools benefitted from our allocation for bursaries,” Otiende said.

Rarieda Constituency has so far recorded 81.4 per cent transition to Form 1 from the 2023 KCPE. The MP on that note urged principals to help the learners join schools as the NGCDF seeks ways of supporting them.
