MP renames two Kisumu schools in honour of Raila and Ida Odinga

Kisumu East Member of Parliament Sbabir Shakeel is set to dedicate two learning institutions in honour of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his spouse, Ida Odinga.

Already, Kibos Secondary School has been renamed Dr Ida Odinga Girls Secondary, the first girls-only learning institution in Kisumu East constituency.

Ida attended the ceremony in the company of Ruth Odinga, the County Woman Representative in the National Assembly; Dr Mathew Owili, the deputy governor; Rosemary Birenge, the County director of education; and Olago Aluoch, the national chairman of the NG-CDF board.

Shakeel said the NG-CDF offices will also be converted into a boys’ school called Raila Odinga Secondary School.

The MP said the work on the complex is already complete, with paintings and a few fittings remaining.

He also donated a Sh1 million cash to the girls’ school towards the education of needy students,

Earlier, Ida commissioned a 200 capacity dormitory, a school bus, a laboratory and an administration block.

She promised to support the school until it is well established.

Mama Ida urged the students to take their education seriously since it is the only gift their parents can give them.

The woman representative also called on them to take science subjects seriously.

Odinga said the mathematics phobia among female students should be discarded since the subject is the foundation for many things.

She promised to sponsor more female students to pursue technical courses.

Dr Owili called on members of parliament and the Council of Governors to ensure the NG-CDF is enshrined in the constitution.

He said the program has helped millions of needy students pursue their education.

Owili said the Kisumu County Government supports over 300 learners through the scheme and that all parties should fully support it.

The leaders lauded Shakeel for his efforts to support education.

They called on other leaders to follow suit.
